Course: Graphic Communications I
Course Description:
This program provides theory and studio work related to the design and execution of illustrations, and artwork for display, publication and other commercial and personal purposes. This program will allow the student to find and develop their visual voice. Instruction includes the development of critical thinking skills, the elements and principles of design, computer imaging used to create illustrations, package and product design, photography and some video production.
Text and Supplemental Materials Used: graphic design basics, amy e. arntson; various current events news articles, field trips, guest speakers, muti-modal presentations/technologies, local artists’ work, etc.
Outcomes:
Outcome 1: Develop Art Awareness
Competencies: the successful student will be able to:
- Use art vocabulary within the proper context
- Develop a basic knowledge base of diverse artists and their movements
- Make connections between artmaking and societies
- Address weekly sketchbook questions showing evidence of building critical thinking skills
Assessment: project based activities, sketchbook, group discussions/activities, critiques

Method of Evaluation: Portfolio and Sketchbook Reviews at the close of each quarter. (all portfolios are done digitally)

Graphic Design I
Graphic Design I provides learning experiences common to all graphic communications occupations. Instruction should include use of color, balance and proportion in design; three-dimensional visualization; sketching; design procedures; layout; selection of type styles; selection of appropriate drawing tools and media; and the use of the computer as a communication tool. Planned learning activities will allow students to become knowledgeable of fundamental principles and methods and to develop technical skills related to the graphic arts industry.
Students develop basic digital photography skills and how to use photography editing software. Students create a digital portfolio of all work. Students learn to write a professional resume and artist statement.

Commercial & Advertising Art I
This course is designed to provide students with the skills needed for a career in the fields of advertising, commercial art, graphic design, web site development, and graphic illustrator. Students learn to apply artistic design and layout principles along with text, graphics, drawing, rendering, sounds video, and 2D/3D animation integration to develop various print, video, and digital products. Students use hardware and software programs to create, manipulate, color, paint, and layer scanned images, computer graphics, and original artwork. Students use hard hardware and software to capture, edit, create, and compress audio and video clips. Students use animation and 2D/3D hardware and software to create animated text, graphics, and images. Students apply artistic techniques to design and create advertisements, displays, publications, technical illustrations, marketing brochures, logos, trademarks, packaging, video graphics, and computer-generated media.
Students create a digital portfolio of all work. Students learn to write a professional resume and artist statement.
