Guest speakers talk to Auto Technology students about careers.

Two well-known technology schools have given presentations to auto mechanical and auto body students since the beginning of the year about careers choices in general and opportunities available in the automotive field. Representatives from Wyo Tech in Laramie Wyoming,and Ohio Tech in Cleveland Ohio spoke to the students insight on their schools, careers choices and automotive careers. Later in the year Highland College, NICC in Peosta, UTI in Glendale Heights Il and the military will speak to the students also.
Careers in the automotive related fields are still strong but diesel technicians are highly sought after. The students found out programs cost, length of study, living arrangements, and activities these schools offer. Most of the students have heard of these programs as all of these programs have had former AVC students enroll after high school.
Students often find out these schools look more at attendance, attitude and appearance than grades. One representative stresses that he values a perfect to very high attendance record to get into his program. As he says, "we can teach you our programs but we can not teach you if you are not there." In fact most programs make you retake the course which are usually 3 months long of 5 to 6 hours a day, if you miss more than 7 days.
The goal of having all of these representatives speak is to help the students find a career path after high school. As one representative states every year, "it does not matter whether you go to my school or not, just understand the difference between a JOB and a CAREER. A job you work at, a career you work for."
