Graphics Haunted House

There's Something Scary Going on in Graphics

Students Create a Haunted House

by Irene Thraen-Borowski

November 04, 2008

On October 30 and 31 the Graphic Communications students hosted a Haunted House that started in the old darkroom, traveled through the back of the classroom, and ended outside by the greenhouse.  During those two days, over 120 area vocational students went through the haunted house.  Students were required to sign up in advance and present their ticket with their designated time upon arriving for their tour.  Tours were free and limited to three people at one time.  This was the first year the Graphics class created a haunted house and it was huge success.

The week leading up to October 30 and 31 all graphics students worked together to create their haunted house.  Students divided up in to sub-committees such as publicity, costume development, tour guides, layout/assembly, and clean up crew.  Given the limited amount of time the class had to pull this large project together, every class was a flurry of activity.  The students were in charge of every aspect of creating and running a haunted house.  This project provided spacial challenges, popular culture design elements, numerous teamwork opportunities, as well as leadership roles.  Without every student's willingness to listen to each other, work as a team, and maintain enthusiasm for this project, it would not have come together as strongly.

"I have had quite a few students from other programs stop me and tell me that it (haunted house) was really neat after they had gone through it.  We even had some people go through it multiple times.  At times, I wondered if we would be able to pull everything together in such a short amount of time, but the final product exceeded my expectations.  This might be something we do every year.  It was such a neat opportunity for my students and was met with such positive responses from other students and staff.  I am very proud of all the hard work that went into this project." said Mrs. Thraen-Borowski.
